Opening Quotes...

"Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better."

~ Andre Gide

“We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.”

~ Bob Ross

***

“Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.”

~ Leonardo da Vinci

***

“Life is art. Art is life. I never separate it.”

~ Ai Weiwei

***

“Art is the stored honey of the human soul.”

~ Theodore Dreiser

In your notebook, copy the quotes that resonate the most. Reflect on each quote and ask, "What's true for me today? What's sacred here?" Write in a way that is loose and free. Write to explore.

5 Minute Word Play...

vellichor

What's the pronunciation? Definition? What do you love about the sound and feel and meaning of this word? What's happening for you in the space of this experience? Where does this word inspire you to go? Is there a story here for you to write?

"100 Questions"

Before you watch the video below, title a new page in your notebook, "100 Questions" and then create 100 spontaneous, stream of consciousness style questions about art, life, writing, and design. Create as many questions as you can and then use the video below to design even more! The goal is to get to 100, pick your top 5, and then answer your own questions across the week.

Understanding the Principles of Design:

After listing your questions, go back through the video to each painting, sculpture, or art piece. Linger for a few seconds and ask, what's the story happening here? Jot your ideas on a new page in your notebook. Which of these ideas could you craft into a short story?

Which principle are you today? I am _____ and here's why...

Which principle is showing up in your life and asking that you lean in and take a closer look?

Which principle is catching your eye and could be turned into a short story, poem, or song? Create it!

***

Pick 5 principles of design from the list above...

Create a character walking (or not walking) through a carnival fun house. Each room corresponds to one of the principles you just selected. What's happening in each room?

Design this piece as one short story or a collection of 5 mini stories. Zoom in on description and exaggerate the principle of design in each room. How does your character engage with this exaggeration? What's the effect of this exaggeration on your character?

Have fun with this!

A Writing Tip...

Metaphorical thinking and metaphorical writing are the design elements we use to achieve depth, complexity, nuance, and subtext in the space of our notebooks.
